Improving primary science in your school NY072
Discover the key components of a strong science curriculum and make science learning better in your school
Summary
Do you have a broad and balanced primary science curriculum? Does science have a high profile in your school or does it get squeezed out in favour of mathematics and English? Ensuring ‘that the science curriculum is planned to take account of what pupils learn’ is a key recommendation in Ofsted’s Finding the optimum: the science subject report, February 2023.
This course will examine how schools can make science learning better and meet the needs of all children in your school. You will explore why your curriculum should be specific about the knowledge learnt at each stage and how both substantive and disciplinary knowledge can be sequenced so knowledge can be continually built upon.
You will discuss the expectations outlined in both the 2019 Ofsted framework and the key recommendations from Finding the optimum: the science subject report and consider the implications for your school.
Access to a self-paced, online formative assessment course is also included. This will support you to further improve your planning and tailor activities for assessment and feedback opportunities.
