Cutting edge science: earth observation RP488
Discover the latest research in Earth Observation Science and ways to bring this to your physics lessons
Summary
Developed in collaboration with the National Space Academy, this course will develop your understanding of Earth Observation Science and ways in which you can bring this to the physics classroom.
Earth Observation Science is the gathering of information about planet Earth's physical, chemical and biological systems via remote sensing technologies, usually involving satellites carrying imaging devices. By using this technology, we can assess changes in the natural and man-made environment which in turn, can inform policy and decision making.
The course will focus on how cutting-edge research in this field is a fascinating and critical application of KS4 and KS5 physics topics. It will include hands-on activities that students can use to investigate the physics of the EM spectrum, gases and thermal transfer that will unlock understanding of the science of Earth Observation while focusing on developing key practical skills. It will also look at how you can easily bring real Earth Observation data to your students using simple, browser-based interfaces to get them working as problem solvers to tackle some of our planet's biggest challenges.
You will hear from research scientists on the latest developments and from lead educators on how this research can be integrated with your teaching and combined with resources and activities to deliver inspirational lessons in KS4 and KS5 physics. You will also gain a wide appreciation of the many and varied careers available in Earth Observation Science.
