Estimates from Limited Data
This activity can be used to provide a simple introduction to the technique of Fermi estimation. The three files contain an overview, teacher notes and a student handout.
Estimates from Limited Data - Overview provides a brief outline of the activity contained within the resource.
Teacher notes - Making estimations from limited data provides guidance for each of the five problems with hints and suggestions for different approaches to solving each of the problems. A possible solution is given for each problem. Helpful suggestions include encouraging the students to make a calculation chain to help them arrive at an answer.
Students sheet - Making estimations from limited data starts with a map of the Isle of Wight and the problem outlined is whether the population of the Earth could fit onto the island. There are four further problems which may be attempted in any order.
