Secondary: Respiratory Hygiene
Produced by the Health Protection Agency, this e-bug resource contains teacher guidance, stimulus materials and student activity suggestions. This resource aims to teach students how poor respiratory hygiene can lead to the spread of microbes and disease by coughs and sneezes.
Students use a 'sneeze-gun' to observe on a large scale how far microbes are carried when they sneeze and how many people can be affected. Through a set of trial experiments, students learn that covering your mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze helps prevent the spread of infection.
An extension activity asks students to consider how far a virus can spread in a week. The results can be astounding!
