Across the depths
This activity has been designed to help pupils understand the range of different creatures that are found across different depths of the ocean.
To complete the activity, pupils need to cut out 14 different species and assign them to different depths of the ocean across four different zones: the sunlight, twilight, midnight and abyssal zones.
Before completing the activity, pupils are encouraged to undertake partner or group work to consider why different species may be found in different areas:
- What environmental differences might there be between zones at different depths?
- Could any of the animals swim up and down across different zones?
- What adaptations do these animals have to help them survive?
There are also some tips to help facilitate this group work highlighting what some organisms might need e.g. sunlight for photosynthesis or air to breathe.
This activity is recommended for ages 7 to 12.
This resource was created as part of Protecting Our Planet Day (POP) 2024 to highlight the importance of life in the deep sea, and how we explore and protect ocean environments.
