Which fuel is best?
This resource contains a series of tasks which builds pupils' knowledge and understanding of combustion and how to evaluate what makes a good fuel. In the initial task pupils' are introduced to the properties of complete and incomplete combustion and this is then applied to the combustion reactions that take place in vehicles. A subsequent task asks pupils to identify fuels which are hydrocarbons and draw the structure of some simple alkane fuels. Following this pupils have to identify the properties of good fuels and explain why these are important for fuels.
The final task asks pupils to take on the role of a fleet manager for a transportation company whose role involves buying new vehicles. When evaluating the vehicles to buy a fleet manager will consider the fuel it uses. Using all the knowledge acquired in the previous tasks pupils have to select a type of fuel they would like to use in these new vehicles and justify their choice.
